Hamilton Mountain News
After reading that the light rail transit (LRT) spur line that was supposed to connect LRT with the waterfront will be replaced with bus rapid transit (BRT) from the airport to the waterfront, I was left scratching my head in confusion.
The moribund Hamilton Street Railway already runs the 20 A-line express bus service during morning and evening rush hours, from the airport to the waterfront.
Seventy-five per cent of the route is on Upper James Street, which is a highway already widened to the max and would be paralyzed if a real segregated BRT, taking up two lanes of traffic, was implemented.
Downtown, James Street North would be a parking lot for car traffic if the BRT was segregated in this portion of the route.
It seems city hall has become mesmerized by LRT that won't be operational until 2025.
In my humble opinion, the LRT should have been extended to Eastgate Square as originally planned. A BRT offer seems hollow — and city council fell for it hook, line and sinker.
